Student Health Insurance Committee

The RFP committee has received 4 proposals for Student Health Insurance. After careful evaluation by the RFP committee the contract has been awarded to G.M. Southwest Inc./Clarendon for the 2003/2004 academic year.

The insurance program can be reviewed at several locations. First , if you want a brief synopsis of coverage you can view a brochure called "Insurance Plain and Simple" . If you desire a more detailed description of the plan you can view the "Insurance Booklet". Finally, if you desire a detailed explanation of the coverage as well as a description of the insurance provider with the capability of applying on line you can visit the GM Southwest website.
A timetable of when information will be sent out is as follows:

  • For those insured under the current plan, bills for automatically renewing coverage will be mailed the first part of June.
  • Information approved by the Insurance commission and posted to the web by mid June.
  • Mass mailing to all registered incoming students during the last week of June.
  • Insurance packets will be available the last week of June.

Please note that you may apply for coverage online after July 1. We encourage you to do so and avoid any unnecessary waiting. It is extremely important that your address is up-to-date so that your insurance card isn't mailed overseas or another destination where you will not receive it promptly. We will be using the address listed in the Hokie Spa. Visit the Hokie Spa to update your address.

We continue to offer three levels of major medical coverage and an accident only plan. Please review the coverage provided as there have been some additional benefits added, such as well baby care and prescription coverage for contraceptives. We have also added an expanded benefits level of coverage. You must select one of the health plans to be eligible for this additional coverage. The expanded benefits coverage provides insurance for dental, vision and screening concerns.

You may review the remaining portions of this web site for a brief history of how this current plan was developed. You may also want to check back periodically for new insurance information and information on the claims experience of the plan.

Questions can be referred to the Student Insurance office at the new Student Services building by calling 231-6226 or by stopping by Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm.
