  1. Committee members introduced themselves and gave a short explanation of what they felt this group should accomplish. The addition of additional student representation was discussed with the committee asking the BOV Grad Studen representative and the Graduate School internation student representative to discuss this membership with additional student groups. New members would be welcomed at the next meeting.
  2. The Risk Management representive discussed previous work completed by a similar committee some five years ago. Information was shared with the current committee about the frequency of the review process, how the current committee was formed and their responsibility of this committee. Basically this group is to review and recommend the benefit mix for the bid of the 2003/04 student insurance program. Once the benefit mix is established an RFP will be developed by the Risk Management office. The RFP committee will be made up of several representative from this benefit committee and two representatives of the Risk Management office.
  3. The committee discussed what mechanisms would be used to gather insurance information to be reviewed. A survey was sent in the mass mailing to all students. This survey will be compiled and sent to committee members before the next scheduled meeting. This effort will be handled by the Risk Management representive and the GM Southwest representative.
  4. Two open forums will be held on campus with the Graduate School representative taking the leadership role. One forum will be held at the Northern Va. Graduate school with NOVA Graduate school representative taking leadership on that program.
  5. Sign up sheets will be sent around at the upcoming GSA meeting to possibly have some smaller focus sessions with students. Representatives for the Graduate School international students and the BOV graduate students were to handle the leadership roles.
  6. The Risk Management representive indicated that those taking leadership roles were responsible for notifying committee members of any necessary participation.
  7. The Committee felt strongly about having this groups activities, meeting minutes and general insurance information concerning the bid process be put on the Web. The Risk Management representive agreed to have his office put together some information and report back to the committee next meeting on content and feasibility of the web site.
  8. As the 9/26 meeting date and time was satisfactory to all in attendance, the next meetings were schedule for 10/17, 10/31 and 11/14 (if necessary) from 9am to 11 am with location to be announced later. The Schiffert Healther Center offered the conference room in McComas.
  9. The Risk Management representive covered some general information related to the current student insurance program. University philosophy related to the amount of insurance provided, why Virginia tech offers the dental plan it does and why the university has mandatory insurance in certain areas was discussed.
  10. The GM Southwest representative covered current plan benefits and possible factors that will affect future costs.
  11. As various committee members had to leave at 11 am the discussion on Insurance, Loss Ratios and Current experience was carried over until next meeting.
  12. Meeting was adjourned.
